Creative Café: A Space for Creativity & Wellbeing
Creative Café is a welcoming space where art, conversation, and connection come together. Whether online or in our Blyth studio, we provide a safe, relaxed environment for adults to explore their creativity, boost their mental health, and find a sense of belonging.
From its early days as a local drop-in to becoming a vital digital lifeline, our Creative Café project has always been about more than just making art – it’s about ensuring creativity and companionship are accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
Please Note: Creative Café is a funded project and runs at specific times throughout the year rather than as a permanent drop-in. Access to these sessions depends on current project funding. You can check our What’s On page to see our current programme of work.
What to Expect
Our sessions are informal artist-led gatherings led by experienced facilitators. You might find yourself:
- Exploring Mixed Media: Drawing, sculpture, printmaking, batik, felting, and silk painting.
- Finding Your Voice: Creative writing, story-making, and “critical conversations.”
- Mindful Creating: Using easily found or recycled materials to create something beautiful.
- Celebrating Together: Themed events like our “To the Moon and Back” lunar landing celebration or creating “Blue Flags” for our Blyth beach installation.
A Decade of Impact
The Creative Café format evolved from our Loose Ends project, where we brought people together around textile arts as a powerful way to break down barriers. Since then it has grown into a versatile project supporting diverse groups:
Supporting Mental Health
For many adults navigating mental health challenges, Creative Café has been a sanctuary. It offers a way to generate positivity and mindfulness, especially for those in remote rural areas of Northumberland who might otherwise feel isolated.
“I feel really relaxed, better. It’s the first time in ages I’ve felt ok among people… It’s nice to do what you like, no pressure.” – Past Participant
Learning Disability & Autism
Our specialised sessions for learning disabled and neurodiverse adults provided a safe environment to explore new skills, build confidence and stay socially connected throughout the pandemic. Online Creative Café sessions became a vital space for participants and their carers to use art as a way to share their real-life experiences of the healthcare system during lockdown.
The Digital Lifeline
Following the pandemic lockdowns many people felt unable or unsafe meeting in-person, and so we provided digital Creative Café “meet-ups” via Zoom. This shift opened doors for many who are housebound or live in remote areas, proving that you don’t need to leave your home to be part of a community.
“I have been looking for something just like this for years. Being mostly housebound… everything was suddenly more accessible to people like me. This has given me so much more confidence.” – Past Participant
